Design

Sometimes the word “designer” is just used for effect, to make ordinary things sound more trendy and desirable without adding real value. A designer toaster may be shiny – and it’ll certainly be expensive – but how well does it brown the toast?

We try to make rooms work. That’s especially important when it comes to kitchens, because of all the rooms in your home, the kitchen is the one that requires the most careful thought if it’s to work properly as well as look good.

I sit down with my clients to work through all the options. Not just the layout and the way the storage works but the dimensions, materials, colours, textures and surfaces. The key is to know the rules, then throw out the ones that get in the way. There’s a lot more to getting it right than just lining up the boxes.

But not everybody wants cutting-edge design. We work for real people, in real houses. And things don’t have to be expensive, either. Classic furniture based on good proportions, simple detailing and thoughtful design will outlast the field.
